This project is incomplete. Mainly I don't have a lock mechanism designed into the knife yet, but sharing the project now.
Back in college I took a survival/minimalist camping class.
I took two knives on the trip, a narrow Benchmade knife, and a wide Swiss Army knife. I spent a lot of time using my knives, especially because we had to make our own shelters. The inside of my hand hurt really bad from so much knife use, especially with my narrow Benchmade knife, so I used my wide Swiss Army knife more, even though it was getting dull.
The goal of this project is to create a knife that is low profile/low bulk for easy daily carry, but if/when it needs to be used heavily for some unforeseen reason, it has the optional ability to provide a wide surface to reduce hand pain and fatigue.
These are the two knives I brought on my survival class trip. The width of the Swiss Army knife made a huge difference for my sore hand under heavy use.

The shelter I made that required lots of knife use.

Three grip widening methods.
